Game Changer: Pete Carroll

What makes a legendary coach?

Is it their résumé? Wins and losses? Championships? Longevity?

Perhaps it’s all of those things. But impact and culture are just as important, if not more so. After all, impact and culture often translate into those other “quantifiable” categories.

With over four decades of coaching experience, Pete Carroll’s résumé speaks for itself. Carroll is a Super Bowl champion, has won two NFC Championships, and claimed seven consecutive Pac-10 titles with USC, including two national championships (one later vacated). He is one of only three coaches in history to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl.

But how did he build his résumé?

In her bestselling book Grit, Angela Duckworth explores Carroll’s commitment to fostering perseverance and passion throughout the Seahawks organization. She describes her visit to Seattle’s training camp, where slogans and mantras were embedded into the team culture and physical environment: “Compete in everything you do. You're a Seahawk 24/7. Finish strong. Positive self-talk. Team first,” were principles not only painted onto the walls, but lived and embodied by players and coaches at all times.

Carroll has said, “Your mind is your most powerful weapon. Mastering it is the key to high performance.” That mindset is apparent in everything he does, from his approach to coaching football to his openness toward evolving conversations around mental health and wellness.

The impact of that approach can be seen in the players who played for him. Brandon Hance, a quarterback at USC during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, reflected on Carroll’s influence not just on his game, but on his life. In an article for I Love to Watch You Play, Hance shared six life lessons from Coach Carroll that he still carries with him. Many focused on mental skills: resilience, optimism, and self-belief, which have served him well long after his playing days ended.

Ultimately, Carroll’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments on paper. Through his positivity, his emphasis on mental strength, and his belief in the power of culture, Pete Carroll has left a lasting impact on generations of athletes. His players don’t just leave with stats and memories; they leave with the mental skills and tools to thrive in life.
