The truth about GLP-1 weight loss medications and performance.
Content provided by Eden Morris, MS, RD, CIEC

What are GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, also known as GLP-1 agonists, GLP-IRAs, GLP-1 analogs, or incretin mimetics, are a class of medications that activate the GLP-1 receptor, leading to reduced blood sugar levels and decreased appetite, which in turn results in lower energy intake.
GLP-1 agonists
Mimic a gut hormone that slows digestion
Suppress appetite
Help manage blood sugar
These medications were originally developed for diabetes—now the doses are being maximized to market them for intentional weight loss.
Why this topic matters.
GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are increasingly prevalent, even in sports. But these drugs can seriously impact fueling, performance, and recovery. Some professional athletes have been promoting or openly using GLP-1s, which can create mixed messages for younger athletes and fans. If you're considering these medications, make sure you fully educate yourself, consult trusted medical professionals, and understand how they may affect both your health and your athletic performance.
Why are some athletes curious about GLP-1s?
Pressure to stay lean
Weight stigma in and out of sport
Desire for control over food and body
The problem for athletes is that GLP-1 agonists...
Slow digestion can cause nausea and GI distress, suppress appetite
These medications make it hard to eat or absorb enough fuel for training
When fuel drops too low...
Low energy availability can lead to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), which can cause:
Hormone disruption
Fatigue and injuries
Loss of muscle
Lower performance
How athletic performance takes a hit
Slower recovery
Poor muscle repair
Blunted training adaptation
Your body cannot perform efficiently when it's running on empty
And the effects are not just physical, GLP-1s quiet "food noise", but can also:
Dull hunger and fullness cues
Reduce the enjoyment of eating
Increase disconnection from your body
Before considering GLP-1s, ask yourself:
Am I eating enough to match the energy demands of training?
Are my goals about weight or performance?
Have I explored ways to improve my body image and fueling strategies?
Am I working with a sports dietitian who can give me more information about these medications?
